Student scholarship winners Coty Maypole, Gary Change alongside Dr. Lawrence Whitehead

Student Scholarship Bios

Coty Maypole grew up in Marble Falls, Texas. She attended Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas and received her B.A. in Chemistry. At Southwestern, Coty was named a Welch Scholar of Chemistry for three years as well as a member of Phi Alpha Theta, the National History Honor Society. With her major in Chemistry and a minor that focused on Environmental and Labor History, Coty pursued a graduate degree that had aspects of both of her interests. She found this perfect fit at the Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Division at the University of Texas School of Public Health and is pursuing her M.P.H. in Industrial Hygiene as a NIOSH Trainee.

In the summer of 2006, she interned for Albemarle Corporation in Magnolia, Arkansas where she was able to apply her knowledge that she gained from her coursework. In 2007, Coty has received the Susanne M. Savely Scholarship as well as the APHA Environmental Section Student Scholarship. Presently, Coty is working for Drs. Morandi and Stock as a graduate assistant optimizing a method to measure airborne carbonyls.

Gary Chang was born and raised in Houston, TX. He graduated from The University of Texas with a B.S. in Biology in 2006. Gary went immediately to the School of Public Health in the Industrial Hygiene Masters Program under the Environmental and Occupational Health Division at the UT Health Science Center at Houston. Gary is sponsored by a governmental NIOSH traineeship grant. After graduating with a Master of Public Health (MPH), Gary plans to work in the IH industry or pursue a doctoral degree.

Gary's professional interests are in air environment and biosafety. He will be assisting with Dr. Delclos in a research study titled "A case-control study of community exposure to Aspergillus niger protease in asthma". He especially looks forward to working with the participants and learning how to take appropriate samples and analysis. Gary's hobbies include swimming, jiu-jitsu, boxing, mixed martial arts, and bicycling.

Program Overview

The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, School of Public Health, has offered a graduate track in industrial hygiene since the late 1970s. The track is currently available as an option within the Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences. Most students studying IH do so for a masters degree (MPH), and a few study for a doctorate (PhD or DrPH). The masters track is accredited by ABET in industrial hygiene. It is a two-year program if followed full time, and requires a thesis or comparable project. We participate in a NIOSH Education and Research Center (ERC) grant based in our Division, and most of our full-time students are supported with a NIOSH traineeship. In recent years, we have graduated an average of about three students per year. Many of them are already employed in petrochemicals or petroleum, or in health care, both large industries in Houston. Several work in consulting, and several currently or have worked in the semiconductor industry, most of these having participated in the SESHA scholarship program.
